Maybe I'm just pissed that the referee just cheated the USA out of a goal, but why is it his decision only whether or not an entire team of hard-workers wins or not?

Same goes for the monthly voting pool here on Newgrounds. 3 Nintendo parodies this month? A stick movie solely made of tweens? And a movie solely relying on a Bo Burnham song for it's only purpose (comedy?)?

Why are these people given the power to decide who gets the exposure and wins or loses? Why aren't tapes reviewed in soccer/football as they are in american football to get a better judgment made, and why isn't there more involved in selecting individuals to judge things?

I've been here for 6+ years and just because I don't blindly vote on submissions every day, someone else who doesn't do anything but vote on newgrounds submissions gets to make the decision in who succeeds on the website. The voting pool has been done the same way for years and nothing has changed with the monthly results - just like soccer referees making calls that can't be refuted.

Except the difference here is if someone makes a terrible judgment, they aren't fired from their position

I would have picked more from the list but thank god this made it as the TWENTIETH RUNNER UP. This should have gotten a monthly but sadly the rest of the entire monthly list of movies was bullshit (look at it again and laugh hysterically). Actually this one is awesome too. 19th place.....seriously....

PS. I'm not going back to school this year (technically i'm still a student on an internship) so I'm finding a new place to live to work on Closure fulltime with Glaiel-Gamer. craigslist is a pain

Also my dog ate my solid gold rubber duck and because i invested all my money into it i have none to give to the doctor for the surgery so give me tons of cash in the mail

Yeah, I've kinda noticed that most artists don't really vote, while the twelve-year-olds vote on everything they see, meaning that they choose the top 20.

It also sucks that most people only vote only 0 or 5, but that's another story.

yeah i admit sometimes i'll watch something but not vote on it but i feel strongly for those who get surpassed by sprite movies. it could really be something good to put on a resume or get a school internship somewhere - to win a monthly award. but getting beat out by things that are funny to 12 year olds, is just frustrating. it really gives a lot of motivation to win something and it's just very difficult to succeed without catering to an audience that wants humor in everything

i agree. Even if the handpicked people are fewer than the people with the most grounds gold deposits, there can still be more than the tank awards. As long as they have proven they have good taste and are fair. There's no way in telling what kind of reputation the people who can currently judge hold...

At the core, Newgrounds is simply a community of artists, whether they be popular comedy cartoonists, aspiring game developers, talented animators with brilliant storytelling, or talented animators with no sense of storytelling. Flashes are judged solely on what the audience of Newgrounds finds entertaining or inspiring. Even if a crappy movie has some beautiful animation (or if it has some relatively cheap video game references), it will rocket to the Top 50 for at least a short period of time because it inspires those who don't know a lot about animating. Even if a unique, fun physics-based game has simplistic geometric graphics (or if it's a porn RPG), it will also rocket to the Top 50 for at least a little while because it's entertaining. It's not often people look for new kinds of art, and new art forms aren't for everyone. Some bizarre works here on Newgrounds just happen to be more successful than others, like David Firth's, Egoraptor's, and MasterAardvark's movies, to name a few. All in all, whatever makes its way to the Top 50 might not always be what the artists of Newgrounds consider impressive, but many great movies and games are still recognized, and they inspire and entertain those who visit the site.

You make a good point. Theres people out there that want a career based off of making a smash hit parody series. The only way to prove their series is 'good' is to see what a huge population thinks of it. The problem is you can't have this type of thing mixed in with more obscure 'art'. I'm a huge hypocrite for bringing up problems with no solutions but I think more emphasis could be put on the issue.

I figured that out when I got monthly 6th like 5 times in a row, with a porn game or two always in the top 5 back when they first started doing that stuff. I mean this is a website with a lot of teens on it, so you can expect what wins will be stuff that appeals to teens.

Most artists dont vote because that aspect of the site doesnt really matter to them. Myself included. Most people create shit because they have a creative calling to do so, its not so much for the sake of hoping to get on the top 50 or whatever.

As for the general audience being given power, thats the unique personality of the newgrounds portal, i dont know why it comes as a shock or outrage to you now even though its been like it for almost 15 years now?
People are given more power as they vote and deposit more. It doesnt claim to be the ultimate fair judgement system but its a system thats worked well and kept newgrounds afloat. No of course its not perfect and sometimes its downright frusterating, but theres something kind of interesting about a system like that. Its like trying to prove yourself to your stepfather who already wants nothing to do with you.

Meh i dunno, id never want it to change or give artists more power just because they create. We're not creating for other artists or to become more powerful anyway, we're creating to share with an audience that for the most part will probably never touch flash and just wants to be entertained.

yeah i agree. i don't care too much about the scoring system itself. i guess if you have to automate monthly voting that's the only way...however i do check out the front page and daily awards a lot.

i guess the biggest thing to me is the exposure people get. if i made something as awesome as 'Still Life Eternal' i linked to above, in school, i'd want as much exposure as i could get on it and possibly SOME SORT of award to help promote it. it's just sad to see stuff like that being beat out by sprite movies...

like i said, this site does have multiple purposes and that is what makes it great. it's just hard to see people that use it for fun beat out people that take their animation seriously and want to get a job doing it.

I believe that whenever the staff handpicks things, they do a good job. It's the certain part of the userbase being allowed to pick things that is the problem.

And yea its never about my own shit. Its the feeling that other superior talent should get the recognition in place of the tons of other nonsense. But thats just the way NG is. Not everyone can understand artistic vision. Everyone can understand Mario getting slapped in the face with a pie.

Also Les Cirque Enfants I ended up favoriting as soon as I saw it. Funny that you made a news post inspired by the treatment it got.

also, correct, i am not complaining about the stuff i have done personally that gets beat out. there are new people all the time that submit fantastic work and they are probably confused as hell about why they aren't getting any recognition
