Uhh, how exactly are the top twenty decided? I'm looking at the list and trying to decipher how a submission with less views and a lower score is higher on the list. If it it chosen by the staff, well then your point concerning that is mute (not being confrontational at all) If anyone could clear this up for me I would appreciate it. Your post reminded me that I had noticed that submissions that clearly seemed to have performed under another were higher on the list.

the top few thousand voters (with the most experience points) get a huge page of submissions that have been front paged etc. and get to choose their top 10 every month. then the votes are tallied. doesn't have much to do with score but its good for getting nominated somewhat

meh I like the system for the most part. Sure its hard to compete against sonic and mario, but wheres the challenge if people didn't submit that? But comparing the users that choose to the ref is a bit backwards. when actually. the voters are the audience, and Tom and staff are the ref. you can vote for crap all you want. but when it comes to front page (review tapes) and tank awards, we bump and bring up what we see fit. Sure theres still the list of what was actually voted on, and that list gets some decent exposure, but really frontpage is where its at, so who cares?
P.S. heres one thing no one seems to mention,
when all the "artists" are bustin their asses working on 6 month long projects, and someone spends six hours on a popular 1 minute clip of mario, should we ignore the site fees, and other overhead that costs to run the site, and leave that one frontpage slot empty? we could only keep that one amazing piece of animation on the front page for so long, what do we do in the meantime when you guys are making your masterpieces?
a majority of tank awards nominees are usually monthly awarded submissions though right? i know they're judged by staff and thats great! but the monthly voter crew is terrible beyond reason
and i understand your PS. front page is fine to me, everything seems alright besides the monthly awards because the jury for those aren't hand picked like the tank awards' jury is
Ahh, 'That explains everything' haha. Couldn't resist. As a matter of fact, I don't really mind the 'system' that runs Newgrounds at all. If an animation student wants to submit 'high art' somewhere, he should expect it to perform under game parody's here. It's nothing surprising. However, I don't like rating other reviews useful or useless. Because you get thousands of angsty tweenagers voting down your reviews because you used more than one sentence. Commented on the actual relevance of the animation to real life OR just plain didn't like it. Then if you say something like "that wuz epick u own nGs" they may vote your review up. But even that I don't really have any beef with, just because I know the crowd I'm associating with here.
i could care less what 'people' think about my reviews. critiquing things to me makes me a better artist and if the author doesn't take my constructive criticism, that's up to him - it helps me at least gain some insight and learn from others' mistakes
edit: mistakes being things i think are objectively wrong
