American gov't destroying internet w/SOPA

Posted by Starogre - December 17th, 2011

If you don't know what's going on with the Stop Online Piracy Act, TotalBiscuit puts it in good perspective.

The US House Committee is still 'arguing' about it and it will resume on the 21st of December this month. Call your local representative's office and leave a message letting them know you are against this bill or the internet all over the world will be ruined forever. Lots of people are all like 'oh it's just another stupid piracy bill trying to pass' but it's looking grim. The reps in favor of it heavily outweigh the opposers at the moment due to lobbying. I watched nearly all the House discussion and there are a few people saying they need more technical experts weighing in, and they need more revision or mechanically the internet could get extremely F'd up. These people were in the minority.

I'm surprised Newgrounds hasn't been talking about it more. The Senate also has a Protect IP Act they want to vote on. So if the House and Senate pass these, Obama will most likely give us yet another wonderful Christmas present in addition to the NDAA and sign this over as well. Call your local rep at americancensorship.org and tell them to oppose it. It's meant for stopping copyright infringement but it's really about censorship and it's disgusting.

I never post about politics here but this affects everyone. Especially the people that aren't 70 years old and use the internet on a regular basis unlike our government.

I could see if they just wanted to stop piracy -- as in illegally downloading shit -- but this is ridiculous.

TL;DR Giant corporations are turning the internet into that shitty useless "intranet" you had in school.
And that's not "maybe going to happen in like 5 years time", it's starting now.

Just- for anyone who scrolled right down.

Ugh, I hate all this government SOPA crap too. It's basically like a kick to the balls, over and over and over again.

The word Republic means our country has people, "Representatives", that speak for their local masses. These representatives were necessary when it was 1776 and America had no way of getting every single person's independent opinion. Now we have the internet. Representatives are obsolete, and they are currently so corrupt that they don't even represent their people anymore.

Ironic that the very thing government is trying to censor with SOPA is the same thing that can replace them, taking away their cushy jobs with perks.

It's a democratic republic, yes. I don't know any alternative though because the average american does not want/have time to read all the laws that our representatives actually vote on these days. That's why they vote/hire in someone that 'should share' the same beliefs as them and trust that they don't F up.

A true democracy would be impossible because not everyone specializes in the complex law we have today

If this passes my internet experience will be as good as shit in my country due to some piece of crap bill on the other side of the world voted for by a government about as competent as a brick where everything is about money. Awesome. Fucking great.

Yep, sorry, not much we can do about it either even in this country. Freedom of speech is directly correlated with how much money you have

I first found out about that insipid shit from the ConceptArt.org forums, and it's about time someone here brought this up. Is it any surprise why a) there are so many conspiracy theorists about (which I don't support), and b) I support the Libertarian Party and the Cato Institute. I cannot fathom that there will be protests if this does pass.

I'm not one to believe in conspiracies because they HAVE been working on this bill for awhile. But along with the national defense authorization act in the same week, and pulling troops out of the middle east, it definitely feels like the government is censoring the internet at a suspicious time when now all of a sudden people have come to the genius realization that the mainstream media is paid off

thx to god i am 80

yea you'll be dead soon you have nothing to worry about

I call shenanigans!

please donĀ“t say "americans" .say U.S.
I`m from Argentina and i`m american...because America is a continent,not a country
and yes...sopa is shit

i understand and sorry if i offend you or sound elitist in any way. I will from now on type out The United States of Americans instead

Oh trust me, if it were published and properly handled it could definitely work.

This website did a good job of putting the proposed bill word for word and allowed people to comment each section.

Summing up laws bill in laymen's terms and with the support of every browser available. (I know Mozilla would support it) You could easily be alerted of any legislation that has potential to be passed.

Yeah, that would be neat. I guess it depends how reliable the points are in the comments when people argue over the implications of said section. At least with news today, you assume there has to be at least 1 certified lawyer that 'translates' to the media.

edit. and another point is the time thing again. the time and effort it takes, and many people would probably not put forth the time on the internet on their computer reading all the arguments etc.

Do you believe in God? :D

which one?

Super Mario World: BEP Part 2 will be out in this year?

Part 2 and Part 3

Ok so it's Part 2 and Part 3?

yeah when should i release part 3?

You ARE mentally retarded.

i am a special blessing from God
